Five Attributes of a Good Manager

I believe a good manager should have the following five attributes; integrity, high EQ, positive influence, courage, and definitely should love reading books. A better manager should also have a fair share of failures and successes that comes from overcoming the odds and bouncing back up from their setbacks.

A manager who has integrity will definitely earn the respect from his followers much better as his words have weight. The words he speak amounts up to the actions he makes.

A manager with high EQ can express himself well in front of his workers and staff well. He can relate to one another not always from one point of view, but also see things through the subordinates’ eyes. This can give assurance to the people that he is not a tyrant who’s fond of leading for the sake of leading, but more of a leader who leads because the people need someone to lead them.

Positive influence is a powerful tool which a manager should possess. This is the type of power that can lift people’s eyes off their situation to see the bigger and clearer picture. Positive influence can bring hope and peace into one’s life, motivating the person to do much better, giving them a sense of purpose.

Courage of a leader is like the courage of a lion leading the herd. The manager should be the one who can bring his team forward, open doors of opportunities that were once closed, and inject faith into the people to continue moving together.

The fifth attribute would be that a manager should love reading books. Knowledge is power, and that every leader should be both technically competent and equipped with practical experience. Books hold the knowledge from other professionals who have tried and tested various approaches and had their experiences written down to be shared with the rest of the world. Information is extremely valuable and a good manager should know how to acquire information so that they can make critical decisions! Literature also builds up one’s confidence in speech and writing, which in turn could also motivate those around the manager to want to improve in their knowledge and education.
